Alkira Organic was established in October 2010 after 2-3 years of discussion between Kelvin Free and Ross Barker about how to best promote and sell organic produce.
The aim was to have a marketing company that sourced produce from its owners and then used the skills of the other owners to effectively market and distribute the produce.
The Free family specialised in growing organic produce, particularly stone fruit.
Ross Barker specialised in marketing and distribution.
They decided to establish a new enterprise, Alkira Organics to grow, market and sell organic fruit.
Farm History
A passion for farming and the land, the Tresco farm is in its fourth generation. Early production consisted of dried fruits, table grapes, vegetables and cereal cropping.
In the 1960s inefficient irrigation channels were replaced with pipe lines then in the 1970s flood irrigation was replaced by pressurised drip irrigation. Crops grown at that stage were wine grapes, stone fruit, table grapes and vegetables including some vegetables seed production . Currently we are focusing on certified organic fruits and vegetables and winegrapes.
Family
Family is the base for a successful farming enterprise. Beginning with the Free and Baker families back in the 1940s to now 3 generations later the farms have evolved into a more customer focused production and packaging business.
Currently all the key roles are managed by the descendants of the original families.
